Mangia bene!

It’s probably good practice for the little Princess – those Italian nonnas are famous food pushers. Eat! Eat! Eat! That is the word of the day in the McYong household these days. After two solid (or not so solid ha ha) weeks of diarrhea, vomiting and refusing to eat, Addison is all skin and bones. With a weight loss of 1.3kg, that’s 2.8lbs, she is down nearly 15% of her body weight. Her jeggings are baggy now!!

There was much concern amongst the members of her medical team at transplant clinic yesterday. So now we are trying everything to get Addison back on track. Her paediatrician has prescribed domperidone to help calm down tummy upset and vomiting. That should bring back her appetite so she will want to eat. The dietitian has suggested the generous use of butter or margarine and 10% fat yogurt.

Well I am happy to report the initial results appear very promising. Last night Addison ate several spoonfuls of Lao-lao’s homemade congee (Chinese rice porridge), a bite or two of french toast (with butter and jam) and a few bites of steamed beef bun. That’s on top of a late lunch of two sticks of french toast (also generously spread with butter and jam) and a couple of tablespoons of grape jell-o mixed with yogurt. A veritable smorgasbord compared to the 4 or 5 Cheerios the princess has had on her daily intake chart previously.

The drug intervention is only a temporary measure because it is unclear how it may affect her Tacrolimus levels. In the meantime, we will have to go for a few extra rounds of blood work to make sure everything is still OK. But, knock on wood, I am seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Mangia bene principessa!!

Love,

Elaine, Aaron and Addison

  1. Mangia bene bellissima bambina…..<3. Wishing Addison good health and a hardy appetite….made me hungry just reading her menu 😉

  2. Good to hear she is starting to eat a bit more now. Slowly but surely!!!!!! At least one things for sure-she’s got the best chefs preparing food for her-mommy and Lao Lao!!!!!

  3. I haven’t been checking blogs lately, so I see lots have happened in a few weeks. Glad to hear Addison is getting better after a rough time. Knowing she often gets rashes, I thought I would let you know that Mattias can handle the high fat Liberte Yogurt, but gets bad skin rash from the 10% Krema yogurt.

  4. My son had open heart surgery when he was 10 weeks old and had a terrible time putting weight on. I use to make French toast for him with breastmilk….that will add some extra calories. I love your blog…Addison is adorable!
