There are so many ways our lives have changed with our little heart transplant hero, and that includes our new huge circle of fellow transplant families. But the one thing that makes me so angry and sad is the harsh reality of life while waiting for a life-saving organ. Over the past two years, we have now gotten to know two beautiful little babies who didn’t survive the wait. It is agonizing because the truth is if we were able to use all the organs that were deemed fit for transplant, there wouldn’t be a wait. People wouldn’t be dying. That means those organs were wasted because someone didn’t register as an organ donor. Actually MOST of us aren’t registered. Right now in BC, fewer than 1 in 5 of us are registered. Even though most of us support organ donation.
Here is what I need you to do. Next week is Organ Donation Awareness Week. I need you to help spread the word because Global BC and BC Transplant are launching an amazing campaign on Monday – 48in48. We want to register 48,000 new organ donors in 48 hours. This is no small feat because that’s the average number of donors who register in one year.
I know we can do it. Please share this post, link to BC Transplant, retweet to your followers, update your Facebook status, forward an email to your friends, family and co-workers, post it on your work bulletin board, bring it up at your kid’s next baseball game, discuss it at Easter dinner this weekend. Remember, everyone can register, young or old. All you need is your Personal Health Number and birthdate. It takes two minutes on your computer. We need this to go viral! I know we can do it!! And let’s make sure all those people waiting on the list get a second chance at life.
