Three years ago, I got the best Mother’s Day present ever. I got a chance to be a mother to my beautiful and tough baby girl. It was the most euphoric day but also the absolute rock-bottom for us as we watched our baby struggle to survive. She came out of surgery at 9am on May 8, 2011. But her new heart wasn’t working. Our elation at a second chance at life was tempered by the sobering reality it may not be successful and she could die.
We learned the most valuable lessons that day. We learned to focus on the positive. We learned to pull together as a couple and as a family. We learned that though there was so much we couldn’t control, we could control how we reacted.
Since then, I’ve tried to remember those lessons. It isn’t always easy, especially when you have a headstrong toddler who doesn’t appear to understand rational reasoning! But it always brings me perspective on what’s most important.
Happy third heart day sweetheart!!
