These are a few crazy weeks for Addison and the McYongs. There are both the girls’ birthdays, our donor Audrey’s birthday, Addison’s heart-iversary, and smack in the middle of all of it – National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week or NOTDAW. I know, who came up with that acronym??? Ok, but in all seriousness, this is a big deal to us. We spend a lot of time talking about the importance of organ donation because we still aren’t getting it done!!!!
Though 90% of Canadians are in support of organ donation, only around 20% have actually registered their wishes to be organ donors. What?? That kind of math makes no sense. I do feel there is a lot of momentum right now. The “Logan Boulet” effect, as people are calling it, is real, and it’s been so amazing to watch this tiny little spark of hope and beauty amongst the horror of such a terrible tragedy. Listening to his family talk about Logan and why he was inspired to register as an organ donor the moment he turned 21 was incredible.
Once again this year, BC Transplant and Global BC are partnering on their #48in48 campaign, trying to get 4,800 people registered in 48 hours. Crazy to think this project started four years ago with Addison as the driving force!!
I know those of you who follow our journey must be long-time converts, or we are clearly doing a terrible job getting the word out there!! So I urge you to take this week as as an opportunity to talk to your family, friends, colleagues, classmates. Take to your social media channels with #Register2Give. Share your story about why you are an organ donor. Let’s keep this conversation going!!!
For anyone who was curious to know how Addison’s big 7th birthday party went, here are some photos of the mad scientists in action:
Happy NOTDAW everyone!!
